Ashtanga yoga is unique in the way in which it is predetermined, meaning that the asanas (poses) are planned rather than improvised. Ashtanga is a structured style of yoga in which class members perform the same poses in the same order each time. Because of this, students are able to remember the sequence, which means Ashtanga teachers spend the majority of their time adjusting faulty postures, rather than actually instructing students as to which poses to do. Ashtanga is similar to that of Vinyasa yoga in that it requires the flow of moving from one pose to another and classes can be very strenuous, particularly for new goers.
