UvWise.ca is owned and operated by Drs. Ben and Lize Wiese. Drs. Ben and Lize Wiese also own and operate the Kelowna Skin Cancer Clinic and treat patients with skin cancer. A proactive step in avoiding skin cancer is UPF (UV) protective clothing, but finding this clothing can be difficult. As a result, Drs. Ben and Lize Wiese created UvWise.ca. In creating UvWise.ca, Drs. Ben and Lize Wiese imagined a Canada where Canadians knew that being proactive about skin protection would help them safely and confidently go outdoors to experience all the majesty that British Columbia has to offer. Drs. Ben and Lize Wiese’s goal is to help all of Canada to become invested in preventing all skin cancers; from the most dangerous skin cancer, melanoma, to basal – and squamous cell carcinomas, as well as precancerous skin lesions (actinic keratosis), we want you covered — literally.

There are two significant impediments to the goal of preventing skin cancer. The first impediment is the misnomer of sunscreen, which is often the first and only prevention method people think of and led many people to feel falsely secure in their sun protection. Often, individuals don’t use enough sunscreen, don’t apply the appropriate level of SPF, and don’t reapply often enough. Canadians are also more and more concerned about the chemicals in sunscreen. The second impediment is access to appropriate clothing to protect our skin from the sun. Research has shown that clothing plays the most significant role in decreasing our risk of skin cancer, and it is now fully understood that total body coverage — dark-coloured, long sleeve shirts, pants and wide-brimmed hats, for example — is the best way to prevent our skin from the UV rays in daylight.
