Today is the last day of Canadian Mental Health Week and we're wrapping things up with a SALT Shaker in our SALT offices. Today we want to focus on the mental health benefits of socializing. Sometimes a chat with a family member, friend, or even a trusted acquaintance can help lift your spirits. If you're on campus today, join us from 12-1pm for a chat and a snack with our SALT team as we enjoy the health benefits of a good visit! #makamicollege #makamicalgary #makamiedmonton #canadianmentalhealthweek

A former beauty consultant, Cresencia wasn’t sure what career she wanted to pursue when she first came to Canada from the Philippines. “It was actually my husband who inspired me to think about becoming a Health Care Aide,” she says. Cresencia graduated and now is a successful Health Care Aide at St. Michael’s Health Group in Spruce Grove. “So far I love it,” she says. “I love being able to support the clients and the residents. Even just talking to them, it makes all the difference to their lives, and I love having that connection with them.” Cresencia says she is very happy in her role, and encourages anyone who might be thinking of a change to give it a try. Hannah was a dental assistant for eight years in Calgary and Nova Scotia, when she decided she needed a change. Hannah went for a massage at the end of 2020 and realized it was a path she wanted to take. “What I love most about MaKami is how committed to the students they are,” Hannah says. “I’ve been to several different colleges in Calgary and MaKami stood out the most to me. This is the one school I’ve ever been to where I felt really, truly supported and as though my success was really their goal." Learn more about her journey: https://loom.ly/qC2yQsg

Kassi has had an interest in pursuing a career as a business administrator since she was just a kid. Diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), Kassi didn’t take much schooling after high school . “It’s pretty tough just doing regular tasks with GAD, so going to school wasn’t really something I thought of until more recently.” She often walked by MaKami’s Calgary campus with her stepchildren before finally deciding to walk in. “I had gone to a few other schools inquiring about their programs, but their registration process seemed very intimidating and complicated, and they didn’t seem to offer many supports to help with my anxiety.” As soon as she enrolled at MaKami, Kassi knew she had made the right decision. “At MaKami it’s been fun and easier to learn. The staff have all been so helpful. They have taught me how to learn with my anxiety disorder, which is nice. Now that my step kids have seen me go back to school at my age, I hope I will inspire my kids to have a better life too," she says. Learn more about her journey: https://loom.ly/p1nIIQ0
