Training physical balance is crucial for several reasons: Prevention of Falls: reducing the risk of falls, particularly among older adults, which can lead to serious injuries. Enhanced Athletic Performance: Many sports and exercises rely on good balance for optimal performance. Balance training improves coordination, agility, and proprioception, leading to better athletic outcomes and reduced risk of injuries. Functional Movement: Balance is fundamental to everyday activities such as walking, climbing stairs, and reaching for objects. By training balance, we are better able to perform these activities efficiently and safely, enhancing overall functionality and independence. Core Strength and Stability: Many balance exercises engage the core muscles, including the abdominals and lower back. Strengthening these muscles improves posture and stability, reducing the risk of back pain and injury. Joint Health: Balance training often involves weight-bearing activities that promote joint stability and flexibility. By strengthening the muscles around the joints and improving proprioception, balance training can help prevent joint injuries and alleviate joint pain. Brain Health: Balance exercises challenge the brain's ability to coordinate movements and maintain equilibrium. Regular balance training can stimulate neural pathways, improve cognitive function, and reduce the risk of cognitive decline associated with aging. Rehabilitation: Balance training is an essential component of rehabilitation programs for individuals recovering from injuries or surgeries, such as ankle sprains or knee replacements. By restoring balance and stability, rehabilitation exercises facilitate a safe and effective return to daily activities and sports. Here is how you can work on your balance. (Concussion - circular balance circuit) Next week: If last week's balance exercise felt too simple, here's a new challenge for you! Did you know that our vision plays a significant role in our balance? It provides about 80% of the information our brain needs to understand where we are in space. So, when we're multitasking, distracted, or unable to focus on an object in front of us, our other balance systems, like the vestibular system and proprioception, have to work harder to compensate for the lack of visual input. That's why balance exercises become much more challenging when performed with closed eyes. (Concussion - circular balance circuit with ball toss) Keep up with the practice and you'll notice it gets easier over time! -Shireen
