Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) and TMJ (temporomandibular joint) are often used to describe an imbalance in the muscles and jaw joints that causes a bad bite and misalignment issues. One of the common symptoms of TMD is constant headaches and facial pain. If found to have this disorder, the patient’s optimal jaw position will be identified, and a treatment plan devised to keep the jaw in alignment. There are several causes of TMD including grinding and clenching teeth which cause abnormal jaw muscle fatigue, trauma, misalignment of the jaw which causes crossbite, overbite and underbite, sleep apnea which causes nighttime jaw movement.
