Pathogens that are expelled through an infected person’s “mouth or nose by breathing, talking, singing, spitting, coughing or sneezing” should be described as infectious respiratory particles, or IRPs, the WHO noted in a press release. IRPs include those spread via airborne transmission and inhalation or by direct deposition on the mouth, nose, or eyes. Both scenarios can be described as through the air transmission, the statement notes. There’s no size limit now on these particles, departing from previous distinctions between smaller aerosols and larger droplets.
