🌾✨ The Seeds of Change: Rural Immigration Conference in Brooks concluded yesterday, leaving a profound impact on all attendees! Our former CEO and National Co-Chair of the Afghan Resettlement Project, Fariborz Birjandian, shared profound insights on the Retention of Newcomers in Alberta’s Rural Communities, emphasizing the importance of creating supportive environments for newcomers. Following his address, the Settlement Panel took center stage, featuring representatives including Megan Cunningham from the Alberta Association of Immigrant Serving Agencies (AAISA), who provided valuable insights on the immigration landscape in Rural Alberta. Ricardo Morales, CCIS’ Director of Community Development and Integration Services Division, shed light on the efforts in fostering integration and the role that Brooks & County Immigration Services (BCIS) plays in this endeavor. Brady Schnell presented the community level and shared his experience as the Economic Development Officer and administrator of the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot in the Town Of Claresholm, offering insights from a community perspective. Rowena Bazan also shared her inspiring journey as a newcomer to Brooks, highlighting the resilience and success of her family in the community. The panel discussion was moderated by Mohammed Yusuf Idriss, who played a pivotal role in launching the BCIS project and has been the Service Manager since its inception. He shared heartfelt experiences of witnessing the settlement landscape evolve in Brooks, touching the hearts of all conference attendees. His reflections on establishing the office in Brooks and the journey of servicing clients resonated deeply, reminding us of the transformative power of community and collaboration. The Attendees also had the opportunity to engage in breakout sessions, adding to their collective information throughout the conference and fostering collaboration.
