Creating a sustainable and secure food future

Last week my travels took me to Smokey Lake, Alberta to provide training and start-up services for an indoor farm project at Metis Crossing. This project is a hidden gem located about an hour north of Edmonton. From delicious food, top-notch accommodations, and a gorgeous cultural center full of history, workshops, and friendly people. If you find yourself traveling through the area, be sure to stop in for a visit and enjoy the great community the people are building.   A special thanks to everyone at Métis Crossing for spending the time to show me all the great work that has been done and plans for the future. I would like to give special thanks to everyone who participated in the training course and helped get the farm up and running for the upcoming busy season. This farm will grow fresh food for the kitchen year-round as well as traditional medicinal plants for the outdoor gardens. Can't wait to see you all again soon! #Foodsecurity #education #Alberta #culture #ruraldevelopment #sustainablefuture

    Technology and Innovation

In 2004, after eight years abroad, I returned to Canada and settled in Alberta. I was reminded this past weekend why I love this province. We spent the last couple of days in the hamlets of Kirriemuir and Altario, in central Alberta, near the Saskatchewan border. Everyone we met was kind, welcoming, and incredibly hard working. What really stood out for me, was how important agriculture is to our province, and to the many small communities that grow our food; communities to whom we owe tremendous gratitude. We had a chance to tour Altario School. This small school has made agriculture a central part of the curriculum and is teaching kids everything from growing crops and raising animals to operating a business. Impressively, the school has made ag-tech, including indoor growing, a part of this training. Altario school is growing the next generation of farmers, vets, agronomists, and entrepreneurs and building a model for how rural Alberta can thrive. Thanks to Kevin Van Lagen, M. Ed, for showing us around. And a special thanks to all the kind people with whom we visited, ate, and danced. I love Alberta. Kevin Van Lagen, M. During my last visit to Calgary, I had a chance to visit NuLeaf Farms.    We don’t often think about where our food comes from but my visit to NuLeaf reminded me of my own childhood growing up in an agricultural community. Agriculture has changed a lot, but its still critically important.  NuLeaf is doing great work in bringing indoor farming solutions to remote communities and supporting food security, economic opportunities, and sustainability. They’re working closely with farmers to develop new systems that support year-round agriculture, and schools to help grow the next generation of farmers. They also have the best smelling lobby I have ever walked into! And, the produce -- the intensity of flavour unbelievable. If I had access to this quality of produce year round -- I would eat much healthier!   Thanks for the tour, Carlos and Ryan! www.NuLeafFarms.ca Ryan Wright Carlos M. Have you ever noticed that food seems to be getting more expensive, sometimes it doesn't taste as nice as it once used to and its point of origin quite often exists in some far off place around the World. If like most of us you live to a budget and have a hungry family to feed, you have likely noticed these things for a few years now. Of course COVID didn't help, but likely COVID just illustrated the existence of a far more compelling problem; our relationship with food has changed and not necessarily in a good way. Traditional ag plays a vital role in feeding the World, we know that, but there are other ways to deliver healthy food, locally, at an ever improving price point. A few years back I set out to learn and experiment with growing produce indoors for consumption during the winter time, and to support a better harvest in my modest sized yard outdoors. 💰How We Turned $150k into $1 Million💰 ⭐️We often recognize contributions to our Altario Agriculture Academy and thank groups, individuals, and organizations for the support to our program. Here’s a bit of background or the big picture!⭐️ ⁉️Prairie Land School Division has contributed approximately $150,000 to our agriculture initiatives. However, we have now invested over $1,000,000 in infrastructure, animals, and student scholarships at Altario’s school farm. How?⁉️ 👉 Community Support Via Volunteers We have several individuals in the community who are a phone call away with equipment and expertise to help build, fix, or run something! 👉Community Support Via Service Clubs We have received substantial donations from service clubs and community associations over the years. These groups see the value of our program and are happy to show their support through financial contributions! 👉Community Support Through Individual Donations Individuals, industry, and businesses often provide solicited and unsolicited donations to our academy. They can range from $100 to tens of thousands of dollars in cash or products! 👉Grants and Contests We regularly apply for grants and enter contests. To date our largest grant was $186,000. Our smallest grant was $500. Our largest contest win was $15,000! 👉Income Yes, we make money. We currently make around $60,000 a year selling produce, meat, and other products! ‼️We have a one of a kind student centred program that is continuing to grow and is embracing new initiatives. Behind the scenes many conversations and applications have happened and continue to occur so that we can build on our momentum. It takes time. It takes work. It takes energy. But it is all worth it!‼️ 🚌Support like the support shown to Altario by our school division, our community, individuals, industry, and grants is pretty special. It’s also completely possible for any other rural school who has the support of their division and community. After all, we are just a small school with big ambitions!🎓 #agriculture #agricultureeducation #noexcuses #inspiration #education #makeithappen #justwatchus #studentcentred #rural #ruraleducation

Creating a sustainable and secure food future

Carlos M. Santos and I had the privilege of addressing the bright minds at the University of Calgary this past week! It was truly inspiring to connect with the Sustainable System Engineering students and dive into meaningful conversations about the imperative need for innovative solutions in addressing the pressing challenges of our time.   We delved into the critical areas of feeding, powering, and building sustainable solutions for stronger communities. The enthusiasm and passion exhibited by the students were contagious, highlighting a collective commitment to making a positive impact on our world.   A Special thanks goes out to the the Student Society for Sustainable Systems Engineers (S4E). You did an amazing job and made your first event a huge success. Keep up the great work. #futureisbright #education #community #oppertunity #sustainablefoodsystems
