Traditional Seven Step Hand Caning (with drilled holes)

Holes are drilled around the perimeter of the frame and individual strands of cane are hand woven through the series of drilled holes.

Hand cane weaving is becoming a lost art performed by only a few craft people in Canada. A simple chair can take 20 hours to re-weave, the average chair or panel takes between 15-40 hours to weave.

Cane Webbing, Pressed Cane, Machine Cane or Sheet Cane

Pre-woven sheet cane is set into a routed out groove on the top side of chair, held in place with a reed spline, no holes drilled in framework.

Hand Caned, Blind Hand Caned / French Cane & Double Caned Settee

Blind Caning / French Caning is when the holes of a hand caned chair do not go all the way through the chair frame. Double Caning is when both side of the chair frame is caned. Double caning is also usually blind caned as well.

Hand Caned Hanging Medallion with Sunshine Pattern

Hanging medallions can be woven in a sunrise pattern or using the seven step hand cane method.

Hand Caned Sunrise Pattern

The rising sun pattern forms a sun ray with tight holes at the bottom of the ray and wider spaced holes along the sides and top of the ray.

Danish Cord

These very Classic Danish or Scandinavian chairs had seats woven out of a 3-ply heavy twisted paper cord called Danish Cord. Danish cord seats have two typical styles. One where there is a single side rail and one where there is a double side rail. Laced Danish cord is tightly twisted creating a braided finish. Unlaced Danish cord is not as tightly twisted and produces a smoother surface.

Fibre Rush

Fibre rush is a tough grade paper twisted to resemble natural rush. Material is wrapped around the four dowels framing the square of a seat creating four triangles.

Shaker Tape Chairs

Shaker Tape is made of 100% cotton webbing. It is used to weave chair seats and foot stools in varying patterns. Shaker tape is available in many colours in 5/8" width and 1" width.

Chair Shipping

Most dining room chair seats or backs are removed by removing 4 screws, which screw up through a bottom or side of the frame and into the seat or back frame.

Most chair seats or backs are not glued, and can be removed by tapping it with a mallet, once the screws have been removed.

Full chairs, seats and backs can be shipped using Canada Post, Greyhound, UPS, Canpar or other couriers.

The shipping costs will be reflected in the shipping method, package size and weight. Please contact prior to shipping pieces as we will need to determine weaving cost and return shipment estimate so that payment can be included with your package.

Do not tape the package cushioning as the material will be used for the return shipment.
