Botox Cosmetics
Botox® injections are the fastest-growing cosmetic procedures in the industry, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). The procedure is one of the safest available for the reduction or softening of wrinkles. We frequently use it to treat frown lines between the eyebrows, forehead wrinkles, and lines around the eyes (Crow’s Feet). It may also be used to treat lines around the mouth and those on the neck. A few tiny injections are administered to the skin, which calm the muscles and thus, allows for a smoother, more relaxed appearance. The effect may take three to five days to appear.

Wrinkles such as worry lines, laugh lines, neck lines, crow’s feet and neck bands are caused by muscles under the skin contracting when we laugh, smile or express emotions facially. BOTOX® is so effective because it works on the root of the cause, the muscles. BOTOX® temporarily weakens the skin’s muscles, reducing its ability to contract. No contractions mean no wrinkles, and skin smoother, tighter and wrinkle-free skin.

Our clients typically see results in three to five days. It may take up to 14 days in some cases. The treatment lasts for two to four months. Clients who repeat the treatments every few months over a period of time and follow suggestions and recommendations typically see longer-lasting results.

BOTOX® treatments are safe, easy to administer, and have no harmful side effects. And the best part is, it only takes a few minutes. Depending on the severity and area of the wrinkles, you’ll be up and away in ten to twenty minutes, with just a few BOTOX® injections.

BOTOX® Cosmetic is administered by a healthcare professional as a simple, nonsurgical treatment that is injected directly into the muscles between the brows, for forehead lines and for the treatment of crows feet. It works by blocking nerve impulses to the injected muscles. This reduces muscle activity that causes moderate to severe lines to form between the brows, forehead lines and crows feet.

Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating)
Excessive sweating also known as “hyperhidrosis” is a source of extreme social and work place embarrassment for millions of people. While underarm sweating occurs in everyone, 1% of the population experience excessive armpit sweating or “axillary hyperhidrosis” to such a degree that they may have to change their shirt several times a day or avoid certain types of clothing and fabrics altogether.

Excessive underarm sweating may also be associated with excessively sweaty palms and even facial flushing. Once medical causes of excessive sweating have been excluded, functional treatment options can be discussed.

While patients often start with a variety of herbal remedies, acupuncture, stress and anxiety reduction techniques, topical antiperspirants with aluminum chloride and oral medications to control their problem, the majority of patients suffering with severe axillary hyperhidrosis require more aggressive treatment to control their sweating.
People with hyperhidrosis often:

  • Are embarrassed to give a simple handshake
  • Are afraid to touch another person or hold hands
  • Smudge papers when handling them
  • Have anxiety or difficulty concentrating
  • Wash or wipe their hands constantly
  • Are unable to hold and swing a golf club or baseball bat
  • Are uncomfortable or unable to play a musical instrument
  • Have wet hair and burning eyes due to sweat
  • Have difficulty applying and wearing makeup
  • Have difficulty with a necktie
  • Hide their hands under the dinner table
  • Are embarrassed to handle documents or other items in public
BOTOX® is FDA approved for the treatment of severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis which is excessive underarm sweating without a medical cause. BOTOX® works by blocking the release of a chemical from the nerve ending that causes sweating. By interfering with the release of this neurotransmitter a reduction in the sweat production can be achieved.
Results can last 9 -12 months, and is usually a once or twice a year treatment.

Jawline Reduction (Masseter Muscle Reduction)
We often have patients who come in complaining that they are noticing heaviness to their lower face as they get older. Part of what they are seeing is skin laxity and descent of facial fat causing a “jowly” appearance. Another part of this heaviness effect, however, is an enlargement and squaring of the angle of the jaw. With time, many people develop an enlargement of their masseter muscle. This is the main muscle responsible for chewing. Either through genetic predisposition to enlargement or through continuous exercise via teeth grinding and clenching, or both, the muscle gets bigger. Frequently, patients are grinding and clenching only at night, so they are not even aware that they are doing it. The only signs are wear are along the teeth, some tenderness in the TMJ area and enlargement of the muscle.

As the masseter muscle enlarges and the jawline becomes more square and pronounced, a woman’s face becomes more masculine in appearance. Both men and women appear tense and stressed because they look like they are constantly clenching their teeth.

Some of our male and female Asian patients are genetically predisposed to having a strong jaw, and often call to have an Asian Square Jawline Reduction, in which softening the angular appearance of that strong, square jaw gives them a more oval and gentle shape to their face.

Traditionally, surgical jaw reduction was the only way to change the contour of the lower face. In this procedure, part of the mandible is removed to narrow the jaw. The procedure is painful and requires serious downtime. At Second Skin Medspa we offer a non-invasive, non-surgical solution for our clients seeking to diminish the robust or asymmetrical appearance of their jawline with the innovative use of Botox.

The jaw reduction treatment does not result in weakness of the bite or chewing. We would rather see you in follow up and inject more Botox than put too much in at the outset. Two to four weeks following the first treatment our Botox injector monitors the results and adds more Botox to the area if needed. The effects can be relatively quick however it may take up to six months before the visible shrinking of the muscle can be observed.

Botox injections should be repeated every 4-6 months for up to a year in order to obtain optimal results. Jawline reduction is often maintained even if no further Botox injections are done after the first year of treatment, however, the masseter is a muscle, and like any muscle, will grow over time with constant “working out” through gum chewing, meats, chips, etc, and thus yearly touch ups may be required.

Botox for Tension Headaches
A migraine is a severe, often very painful headache that can be preceded or accompanied by sensory changes such as flashes of light, blind spots, tingling in the arms and legs, and even nausea and vomiting. The intense pain can last for hours or even days. A chronic migraine is a headache that can have tension-type or migraine characteristics and can occur greater than 15 days per month for at least 3 months. If medication fails to provide relief, Botox® injections may be an option for the treatment for the migraines. Botox has been used to treat migraine and tension headaches since 2010, and many studies have supported the efficacy and use of Botox as a pain management system for headaches.

The exact way that BOTOX works to relieve migraines is not yet known. Botulinum toxins are known to have a blocking ability not only at the neuro-muscular junction but at the cellular level as well. When injected directly into overactive muscles, BOTOX inhibits the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter released from nerve endings that causes muscles to contract. This blocks the nerves impulses and results in inhibition, or relaxation, of the muscle. It is suggested that BOTOX actually inhibits pain pathways through multiple actions at the neurotransmitter level and pain fiber level.

A series of small injections of BOTOX in specific areas across the frontal, temporal and glabellar regions of the forehead. In some instances, it is also injected into the back of the neck. The injection location and dosing are critical for achieving an effective, long lasting result that is free from undesired side effects. The treatment takes about fifteen minutes, is easily administered during a routine office visit and you can quickly return to work or normal activity.

After injection, it takes 2-3 days for BOTOX to begin taking effect. The effect lasts for 3 months or longer. Many clients see a noticeable difference within a week of the injections.

BOTOX cannot be compared to other treatments. In those patients where BOTOX was effective, it eliminated pain and related symptoms of migraine (nausea, vomiting, photophobia, etc) for approximated 3 months. There is no other therapy that has this prophylactic ability. By way of comparison, the widely prescribed triptan class of agents (such as Imitrex®) are commonly used as treatment only during or before an acute onset of migraine and have a duration of action for only hours.

Why Botox?
In as little as 10 minutes, just a few BOTOX® injections will improve the appearance of worry lines, frown lines, crow’s feet, neck bands and laugh lines.

These and other wrinkles occur as the muscles under the skin contract, such as when we laugh, smile or frown. BOTOX® injections temporarily weaken the facial muscles in the area injected and relax the skin’s surface thereby removing the wrinkles. Botox injections can also be used to raise a drooping brow or reverse a downward mouth.
We advise our clients, that BOTOX® injections generally take effect in three to five days (up to fourteen days), and last between three to four months. Repeated BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments and proper use may ultimately lead to longer lasting results. There are no significant side effects. Patients can resume normal activity immediately.

Why Wrinkles?
The lines that appear between your brows (glabella), head-lines, crow’s feet, frown lines, etc., are actually a result of constant muscle movement over a long period of time: so called Dynamic Wrinkles (they appear only with muscle movement). After years of repetitive muscle movement, those lines start to become more pronounced, and become Static Wrinkles (they appear with or without muscle movement). For women, whose skin is typically more delicate, these lines may appear exaggerated and more permanent. Come in to Second Skin Medspa and speak to a medical professional about possible treatment options. Constulations are always FREE.

Why Frown Lines?
Aging skin and wrinkles result from a combination of many factors. It’s not just about cellular changes, collagen depletion, hormone loss, or damage caused by free radicals. The 11s – those vertical lines that appear between your brows – result from muscle contractions. When you concentrate, squint, or frown, the muscles between your brows contract, causing your skin to furrow and fold. After years of frequent contraction, those wrinkles can linger even after the muscles are at rest.

BOTOX® Cosmetic works by blocking nerve impulses to the injected muscles. This reduces muscle activity that causes the persistent lines to form between the brows.

Static Wrinkles
Static wrinkles are caused by a loss of elasticity in the skin due to aging and environmental factors such as sun exposure or smoking. These types of wrinkles are best treated by dermal fillers, like Restylane or Juvederm, facial chemical peels, intense pulsed light or fractional treatments. Speak to our medical professionals about possible treatment options.

Dynamic Wrinkles
Dynamic wrinkles are caused by repeated muscular contractions or facial expressions. In fact, some of these wrinkles, like worry lines, frown lines or laugh lines, are often named after facial expressions. When we’re young, our skin is more elastic and the lines easily bounce back to a normal, wrinkle free look. But as we age, these lines become permanent fixtures on our faces. There are five major types of dynamic wrinkles from the neck up:

  • Glabellar lines (frown lines)
  • Obicularis Oris Type I (Smokers lines)
  • Forehead furrows (worry lines)
  • Crow’s feet, wrinkles radiating out from the corners of the eyes
  • Nasalis (Bunny Lines on the nasal folds)
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT BOTOX
What is Botox Cosmetic?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles and used to improve the look of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines) in people 18 to 65 years of age for a short period of time (temporary).
Those moderate to severe frown lines between your brows form over time as the result of muscle activity. BOTOX® Cosmetic is injected directly into the muscles between your brows. It works by blocking the transmission of nerve impulses to the injected muscles; this reduces the activity of the muscles that cause those persistent lines to form.
Areas treated using Botox include:
  • Forehead Lines
  • Frown Lines
  • Crow’s Feet
  • Smokers Lines or Kissing Lines
  • Jawline Reduction or Masseter Muscle
  • TMJ
  • Tension Headaches (Migraines)
  • Neck Bands
  • Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating)
BOTOX® Cosmetic is administered by a healthcare professional as a simple, nonsurgical treatment that is injected directly into the muscles between the brows. It works by blocking nerve impulses to the injected muscles. This reduces muscle activity that causes moderate to severe lines to form between the brows. Individual results may vary.
Is treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic painful?
Discomfort is usually minimal and brief. Prior to injecting BOTOX® Cosmetic, your Botox Injection specialist may choose to numb the area with a cold pack or anesthetic cream. The entire procedure takes approximately 10 minutes. Many people return directly to work or normal activity following BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment.
Who should not use BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® Cosmetic should not be used in the presence of infection at the proposed injection site(s) and in individuals with known hypersensitivity to any ingredient in the formulation. Patients with neurological disorders such as ALS, Myasthenia Gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome may be at increased risk of serious side effects.
Will I experience any side effects from BOTOX® Cosmetic?
Major side effects using Botox are rare. Our office has only experienced redness, headache, and spot bruising as it’s most common side effects after having a Botox treatment. Some other side effects experienced at less than 3% of all clients have been: flu like symptoms, temporary eyelid droop, and nausea. Less frequently occurring (<1%) adverse reactions include pain in the face, erythema at the injection site, and muscle weakness. These events are thought to be associated with the injection and occurred within the first two weeks of the treatment, and 100% resolved within 1 month of treatment.
What will happen if I choose not to continue BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments?
If you choose not to continue BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments, the moderate to severe lines being treated will gradually look like they did before treatment. Botox effects are temporary and discontinuation of Botox will return all fine lines and wrinkles, or any side effects, back to “normal” within weeks or months, depending on how long you have been using Botox.
Can you match price or pricing from an online dealsite?
You get what you pay for! We cannot lower our standards to meet the pricing of an online coupon or voucher or dealsite. Unfortunately, companies that advertise through Groupon, Teambuy, Ncrowd, etc, often are losing money on their deals, and thus must recoup as much money as possible through upselling, or giving a less than expected treatment – thus saving money or making money. Also, price should not be the main thing when you are wanting to do medical grade treatments on your skin or body. We’ve seen the results or lack there of from clients who have tried using online vouchers to save money on their treatments, however, they often have to spend more money to correct the treatment they did have. Ensure that you are going to a reputable company that have nurses and experienced medical estheticians doing the treatment, or you may fall victim to sub par treatments.
Is it safe to have a Dermal Filler treatment with Botox
Absolutely. In fact, we suggest it. Botox is a great way to help reduce or eliminate (temporarily) fine lines and wrinkles, especially in the forehead area, frown line area and crows feet area. However, because Botox only works on dynamic wrinkles (wrinkles in motion), and not static wrinkles (wrinkles that are visible with or without motion). Dermal Fillers are able to lift the deep wrinkle from underneath, making it literally disappear. Dermal Fillers are also used to plump areas where collagen and elastin have been lost do to age, or excessive sun exposure. You can bring back your youthful look by using dermal fillers to plump up the cheeks, improve the appearance of your nasal labial folds or smile lines, fill in those marionette lines, and more…
